Santa Maria di Walter Viberti

Fraz, Santa Maria 4 La Morra CN | T. +39 328 8695024

History

It is at the end of the 18th century that the Viberti family arrived to Santa Maria in La Morra; Giulio, one of the siblings, started to work as a winegrower. Around 1850 the Viberti family became owner of the ancient so-called “Santamaria” farmstead and of the surrounding territories and vineyards. In those days the viticulture was an almost heroic activity: they worked with the ox or with the horse and they pressed grapes with feet. The family’s ancestors saw the appearance of the Phylloxera epidemic, that destroyed all the European vineyards. In the 1930s the first Barolo bottles labelled by the company appeared. In the 1960s Aldo Viberti run the company, which ages its Barolos in big Slavonian oak barrels; in Italy they are the “economic boom” years. After 35 harvests, Aldo handed over the management of the company to his son Walter, with whom the exhausted vines were replanted and he devoted himself exclusively to the cultivation of Nebbiolo, from which he obtained the finest Piedmontese wine, the "king of wines": Barolo.

People

Walter Viberti has now taken over the legacy left to him by his father Aldo and works passionately on the family business.

Vineyards

The vineyards are located in the region of "Capalot", a historical sub-zone at 350 metres above sea level in the hamlet of Santa Maria di La Morra. The soil of this vineyard consists of clayey-calcareous marl with veins of sand.

Wines

The company produces two wines, all based on Nebbiolo: Barolo "Capalòt" and Langhe Nebbiolo "Freròt". Their Barolo is aged in 10-hectolitre oak barrels for two years (with periodic blending, checks and analyses to verify its correct evolution) and in bottles for one year.
