Serradenari | Giulia Negri

Via Bricco del Dente,19 La Morra CN | T. +39 0173.50119

History

The farmstead found its name in the mists of time, when the Black Plague drove the peasants of Barolo and La Morra to flee to the highest hill with their few pennies. Since 1450 it has therefore been "Sara D'né", today an official sub-zone of the Barolo Docg. Giulia's challenge is that of the latest generation of a family that has been making wine in Serradenari for 150 years. Her family is also called Diatto after her great-great-grandfather who created one of the first cars in Turin, Bodoni after the typeface invented by her ancestor, Chiappero after two members of the Italian Parliament and her father Giovanni Negri, a politician and author of books on wine. Now it's all in the hands of young Giulia, nicknamed 'Barologirl'. Someone called her that because she wanted to make wine in her own way, like her friends the "garagistes" with their heretical wines, without dogma: a few bottles made by craftsmen of the vineyard.

People

To look after the vineyard, make the wines and travel the world to sell them, there are four people in the company. There is Giulia Negri, the Barologirl, her father Giovanni, Alessia, who takes care of importers and trade fairs, and Arianna, the soul of the Tartufaia with her white truffle hunts. Serradenari is no longer just Barologirl: it is Barologirls.

Vineyards

The vineyards are in the highest part of La Morra, at Serradenari. Serradenari descends from the 536 metres of the highest vineyard of Marassio to the 450 metres of Pian delle Mole, where the ancient Mola (grain mill in the local dialect) that perhaps gave La Morra its name, was found five metres below ground. With its vineyards and its woodland, it is a single body of 14 hectares with the winery at its centre, surrounded by very different terrain and large truffle trees.

Wines

The wines produced by Giulia Negri are Barolo Marassio, Barolo Serradenari, Barolo La tartufaia, Langhe Nebbiolo, Barbera dìAlba and also the two curious Langhe Chardonnay and Langhe Pinot Noir.

Winery tours

Visits and tastings in the cellar by appointment. In season it is possible to search for white truffles.
